Meme
whilst talking to a friend, i was reminded of this book i once read. i immediately dug it up and started flipping its pages. good stuff indeed.
The author of the book, David S. Bennahum, used to write this email newsletter that i was an ardent fan of. His writings on techno-culture and reviews of related books brought new insights into my already tech warped mind. This newsletter was meme.
meme: (pron. ‘meem’) A contagious idea that replicates like a virus, passed on from mind to mind. Memes function the same way genes and viruses do, propagating through communication networks and face-to-face contact between people. The root of the word “memetics,” a field of study which postulates that the meme is the basic unit of cultural evolution. Examples of memes include melodies, icons, fashion statements and phrases.
reading it again brings back memories of the past. when i was so glued to Wired magazine. (btw, i found out about Meme from an issue of Wired.) when techno culture was a totally new thing in my little mind. hell, i even went for a talk by the ex-editor of wired when i was over in SF two years ago. she was inspiring. wow. time flies.
go on. take a read. you’ll enjoy it.
